I was reading about a raw food cafe, Karyn's; it's in Chicago. The menu sounds good! They also have some spa services including colonics. The colonic topic is frequently associated with raw food and I'm not sure that I understand why. They both are said to promote internal cleanliness and improved general health. However, the difference is that one works and one doesn't!
A colonic might provide the sensation of immediate relief and stimulation, but does it really improve health? Healthy living is what causes health, that's the bottom line. Organic raw food, pure water and air, rest, exercise, sunshine, mental and spiritual balance, these are the prerequisites of health. Until we begin to incorporate these prerequisites, we will not experience the health that is our natural state. I feel concerned that many people are seeking quick fixes for poor health. Instead of hunkering down and making real changes in their lives, they continue to go for band-aid cures such as colonics and superfoods. Fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts get pushed to the back shelf and the person never acquires long term optimal health.
On Saturday, I stopped by High Vibe; they have a terrific selection of raw food books and packaged snacks. A few raw foodists that I had just had lunch with were there also. A couple of people asked for my opinion about a David Wolfe book. I said that I liked his message more when it was focused on eating raw foods and wasn't pushing superfoods. The very pleasant friendly woman who was working there began to tell me why superfoods are so important. I observed her as I listened; I noticed that she had dark circles under her eyes and she was carrying some extra weight. Are superfoods working for her? I'm not so sure. She might be transitioning to raw and going through detox, you never know.
The colonic and superfood message may sound good but does it work as well as a simple diet of fruit, vegetables, seeds and nuts? Putting colonics and superfoods before raw food basics is like putting the cart in front of the horse; it doesn't work.
